Give your new cricket bat the best start to life with a Fantail knocking in service. We offer a comprehensive knocking in service, combining hand knocking with our state of the art Smart Knocking in Machine.

This process prepares your bat for hardball use. You won't notice a significant difference in performance after the service is completed. However, the service will compress the fibres to maximise the performance within the bat. Bat performance comes from the quality of willow, shape, weight and pressing done by the bat manufacturer.


  1. We apply a coat of linseed oil. Linseed oil helps the cricket bat retain its own moisture and reduces the cracking rate due to allowing the fibres to stretch rather than crack.
  2. The knocking process starts with the edges and toe of the bat we do this by hand using a wooden mallet as these are the weakest and most vulnerable areas of the bat.
  3. It then moves on to our Smart Knock knocking in machine. Which does all that a human can do but better as it has complete control of each strike with placement and power. It works its way slowly up and down the blade while moving across the blade simultaneously. Your bat will receive over 20,000 knocks during our service. 
  4. Once the knocking is complete, we then move onto applying any optional extras you've ordered.
  5. Before using your new bat for match play, we recommend using the bat for light net sessions with an old cricket ball to assess if it is ready. Start with a slow pace and slowly build up. Should small seam indentations appear, slow the pace down and only increase the pace when you can see no new seam indentations. Continue this process until you are using a new ball at full pace. 



  • There is no warranty on non Fantail branded bats that have been knocked in by us.
  • All facings/edge tape will need to be removed before our knocking in period starts. If the bat is new, then we will remove it free of charge. You will need to purchase a new facing if you'd like one to be applied once the knocking in the process is complete as we can't reuse facings.
  • It's not uncommon for bats to develop small surface cracks during our knocking in process. If they do occur, we will seal and fix the cracks for no additional charge.


  1. Place your order online or pop in-store for the services and repairs you require (please get in touch if you need any assistance). Please don't send your bat/s in unless you've placed an order.
  2. Send your bat into our workshop from anywhere around the world (Fantail doesn't organise or pay for this) with your order number, name and contact details attached. Please don't send your bat cover; it may not be returned.
  3.  Your bat will join the queue as soon as it arrives. You won't be notified when your bat arrives.
  4. Once complete, your bat/s will be couriered to the address given in your order details (the return shipping is calculated and paid for in the checkout of our website). You will be sent an email with the tracking details upon dispatch, or we will let you know that it is ready for pick up.

      These timelines are a guide not a guarantee and change throughout each month.
      We will do our best to have your order ready as soon as possible. If you are collecting your bat you will receive a text when your order is ready for pick up. Otherwise you will receive an email once your order has been dispatched with tracking details.
      Please don’t call the store. We can have 60+ open orders at any moment, and as we work on a first-in, first-served basis, we can’t give you a time or day. Therefore, we can only provide you with current timelines below.

      New Bats

      Pre-made - 2 to 4 working days once your selection is confirmed - For any services to be completed.

      Made to order - 4 to 7 working days once your selection is confirmed - For your bat/s to be made and any services to be completed

      Custom - Once your design is confirmed allow 4 to 7 working days - For your bat/s to be made and any services to be completed

      Services & Repairs

      1 to 3 working days - facings and toe guards.

      3 to 5 working days - knocking in and clean face services.

      4 to 6 working days - handle replacements and weight reductions.

      2 to 5 working days - crack repairs and all other services.

      To get a shipping quote, add the items you would like to purchase to your cart and proceed to the checkout. Our system will calculate shipping rates based on your delivery address, order weight and order value. All orders are trackable from dispatch to delivery.

      • Domestic / New Zealand orders get sent via Post Haste. Allow 1 to 3 days for delivery.
      • International Orders get sent via DHL Express. Tax & Duties get calculated in the checkout of our website. Allow 1 to 4 days for delivery.

        Click, Drop & collect allows you to place your order through our website, drop your bat/s off to our store then collect your bat/s from our Auckland store when the work is complete.

        How do I select store collection?
        Proceed to the checkout of our website with the items you'd like to purchase in your cart, you will then be offered a delivery method of "Ship" or "Pick up". Select "Pick up" then proceed with your payment details.

        During what times will Click, Drop & Collect be open?
        Click, Drop & Collect will run as per our regular store opening hours.

        Is the Click, Drop & Collect option free?
        Yes, our contactless Click and Collect is completely free.

        How will I know my order is ready for collection?
        We will email you when your order is ready for you to collect.

        Can I drop my bat off during Level 3?
        Yes, please place your order via our website. You can then drop your bat/s off anytime during our regular opening hours. Once your order has been completed, we will let you know when your order is ready for collection. Collection can be made anytime during our regular opening hours, or we can send it to your chosen address.
